Testing & Inspection

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Services

At Copeland and Craddock, we provide ultrasonic testing (UT) using our team of qualified operators to ensure the integrity of metal components. This non-destructive testing method employs high-frequency ultrasonic waves to detect internal features or defects within a material's volume. Any such features disrupt the wave's reflection, appearing as a distinct signal or 'noise' on the inspection meter.

The size and position of this reading can indicate the size and location of the internal feature.

To begin the process, we apply a specialist gel to the metal component, ensuring optimal contact between the surface and the ultrasonic transducer. The transducer is then moved across the item's surface to scan its entire volume. The direction and orientation of the transducer are adjusted according to the relevant inspection standard, which considers the shape of the component and potential areas of concern.

Ultrasonic Testing

Prior to testing, we calibrate the equipment against a test block containing known features, such as holes or steps, that simulate possible defect sizes. This ensures accurate and reliable inspection results.

Copeland and Craddock performs ultrasonic testing to meet a wide range of industry and customer standards, including those specified by BAe Systems, the US Navy, and BNFL.

Our operators are qualified to Ultrasonic PCN Level 2 and ASNT Level II standards, ensuring professional and precise inspections.

While all our stock is tested immediately after production, additional UT to more specific standards is often requested, particularly when supplying forged or machined components.
